Professor Azhar works at Alty Orthopaedic Hospital. He graduated in 1992 from the University of Southampton and completed orthopaedic training in 1999. He specialises in adult joint reconstruction and did his fellowship in arthroplasty in Sydney and the Gold Coast, Australia in 2003-4. He is active in orthopaedic trauma surgery, elective orthopaedics particularly the hip and knee, osteotomies, knee arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction. He has produced numerous publications in high impact factor journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Journal of Biomechanics and the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Dr Merican completed his doctorate in Imperial College London studying the patellofemoral joint and the role of soft tissues in patellar tracking and stability. His other research interests include the anterior cruciate ligament, hip dysplasia, 3D morphometry of the Asian hip and knees and patient specific instrumentation surgery. He has been in the design team for a hip replacement implant for one of the top five global orthopaedic device companies. He has 23 years experience in hip and knee replacement including revision surgery. He served as President of the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association in 2018-19 and was the founder member of the Malaysian Society for Hip and Knee Surgeons.
